UW–Madison joins Medical Technology Enterprise Consortium

UW–Madison is now a member of the Medical Technology Enterprise Consortium (MTEC), a nonprofit biomedical technology consortium that funds the development and rapid deployment of medical technologies that improve the health of service members and civilians. MTEC gives UW–Madison researchers a path to funding outside normal grants and contracts processes.
MTEC holds a 10-year renewable Other Transaction (OT) agreement with the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC), and works with the Defense Health Agency (DHA), the National Guard, and other Department of Defense medical sponsors. The consortium has more than 800 members in over 20 countries, including industry, investors, nonprofits, and academic institutions such as Mayo Clinic, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Iowa, and the University of Texas System. To date, MTEC has channeled $1.6 billion in federal funding into 384 awarded projects, which have attracted another $1.2 billion in follow-on funding.
MTEC membership brings:
- Direct access to opportunities: Requests for project proposals (RPPs), requests for project information, and enhanced white paper calls go to MTEC members, and only members can submit.
- Faster, more flexible awards: OT agreements move more quickly and with fewer FAR-based requirements than traditional contracts, which makes them a practical way to move university research toward prototype, clinical evaluation, and transition.
- Teaming with industry: Many MTEC awards go to teams. MTEC runs “Teaming Connect” sessions and a member directory that puts our faculty in front of medtech, pharma, and device companies looking for academic partners with specialized expertise, facilities, and clinical populations.
- Visibility with DoW sponsors: Members get access to proposers conferences, educational webinars, and the annual MTEC Membership Meeting, where government stakeholders lay out where military medical investment is headed.
- Active near-term demand: MTEC’s FY2026 Multi-Topic RPP is open now, with enhanced white papers due October 30, 2026. Its 15 focus areas range from National Guard total force fitness, prevention, and help-seeking to wound infection, sepsis, emerging infectious diseases, musculoskeletal injury, non-opioid pain management, and blast exposure monitoring.
Military medicine draws on far more than clinical care. MTEC’s focus areas include military infectious diseases, combat casualty care, military operational medicine, clinical and rehabilitative medicine, medical training and health information science, and chemical, biological, and radiological threats. Relevant UW–Madison expertise includes vaccines and infectious disease, immunology and sepsis, trauma and emergency medicine, anesthesiology and pain, regenerative medicine, biomedical engineering and medical devices, wearable and physiological sensing, pharmaceutical sciences and drug delivery, musculoskeletal health and rehabilitation, traumatic brain injury and neuroscience, prevention science and behavioral health, nutrition, medical simulation, health informatics and AI, and veterinary medicine. If your work touches any of these, MTEC may be a good fit.
If you would like access to the MTEC member portal to receive opportunities, reach out to WINS at nationalsecurity@wisc.edu and include your department and a sentence or two on your relevant research area(s). WINS is happy to help with white paper development, teaming, and navigating the OT process. Please note that MTEC assesses a 2% fee on awards up to $10 million, and 1% of the award amount over $10 million.
